What is Flash Volunteer?
Flash Volunteer is a web-based engagement portal for volunteer service in Seattle. It allows users to find volunteer opportunities and create their own volunteer events to support causes in their neighborhoods. Flash Volunteer was built by volunteers, for volunteers, and we hope you will use it frequently.
How does the site work?
After you create an account, Flash Volunteer allows you to manage all of your volunteer opportunities in one place. You can search for events, sign up for the ones you are interested in, and even create your own volunteer events to address needs that are important to you and your neighbors. We also allow you to track your hours volunteered, so you can get credit for service hours if you need them for school or work.
Where does Flash Volunteer get its volunteer events?
From you! Individual users and local nonprofits post events on Flash Volunteer. We also share events from VolunteerMatch. (If you see a VolunteerMatch event on Flash Volunteer, you’ll also see a VolunteerMatch logo.) When you sign up on Flash Volunteer for an event that originated on VolunteerMatch, our systems will exchange the information and you can expect the organizer to receive news of your RSVP.
So, I can really create my own volunteer event?
Yes, you can! Flash Volunteer was built to give individuals the tools they need to become more engaged with their neighbors. Just create an event and you are on your way!
I just created an account, now I can’t sign in or create an event. What’s up?
Did you confirm your email address? When you signed in for the first time, you should have received a mail from us, asking you to confirm your email address. Once you click the confirmation link in that email, you should be good to go. You can resend the e-mail if you deleted it. If you’re still experiencing troubles, email our customer service guru, Charlie Buttons, at firstname.lastname@example.org, and he’ll get on it!
How can I find events?
Browse by date or location, use the search bar to find your favorite orgs’ pages, and view your recommended events.
Does it cost anything to use Flash Volunteer?
Nope! It’s free for individuals and nonprofits. All you need to do is create an account and you are off and running.
How do I sign up for an event?
Click Sign up on the event page. (From there, you can also share your plans on Facebook, on Twitter, and via email, to get more of your friends on board.)
What are “props”?
Giving props is a way to show your appreciation for a fellow volunteer. You can visit someone’s profile page to give props, and when you receive them, you’ll find the warm-fuzzy messages on your profile page. Just click My Props in the left menu.
What if I see an event that I think is inappropriate?
To report inappropriate events, please email Charlie Buttons at email@example.com
How can I delete my account on Flash Volunteer?
Send Charlie a note at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ll miss you.
Where do recommended events come from?
Our algorithm suggests events based on your favorite causes. If our suggestions are not up your alley, try changing up your favorite causes on your profile page. And feel free to share feedback with email@example.com. We’re always seeking to improve!
So, how does Flash Volunteer make money?
Flash Volunteer is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit and receives donations and grants to keep things running smoothly. You can support us by making a donation. We also rely on volunteers to make our operation go; if you would like to join the team, please get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What types of users are there? Can I create an account for my organization?
There is just one type of user on Flash Volunteer – you! Each person has his or her individual account, and with it comes all the functionality of creating and signing up for events. If you represent an organization that holds events, you can create an organizational page. The page can create events and have multiple administrators. (This is similar to the way that Facebook pages are set up, if you’re familiar with that.) One user can also be an administrator on multiple pages. Kinda cool, huh?
Do you need a ton of information from me for me to sign up for an event?
If you are in a rush, you can do a quick event signup, where you only provide your name and email address. Later, when you have time, you should create your account so that you can take advantage of all the features that Flash has to offer! (Don’t worry, we’ll send you a reminder to do this.)
Uh oh. My plans changed. Can I un-sign up for an event?
It’s OK. Things happen. Just visit the event page and change your RSVP. The volunteer coordinator will receive a message from us that the head count has changed.
How does Flash Volunteer know when I’ve attended an event?
We like the honor system around here. After you’ve attended an event, you record the number of hours on the event page. Or, you can use our app on your iPhone to check in at an event, and your attendance will be recorded.
How do I change the notifications I receive from Flash Volunteer?
Once you’re signed in, click on Settings in the upper right corner of any page. You can edit your communications preferences there. From there, you can also edit your privacy settings.
What is Flash Volunteer’s tax status?

Can I search for events? What else can I search for?
We have a convenient search bar in the top right corner of every page. The best method is to search one keyword at a time. You can search for event titles, user names or email addresses, and organization names or email addresses. The search bar can also deliver frequently asked questions, like this one!
